This book got to me, I could ramble on about this it for hours and make less and less sense, I've only just finished, and the last page made me weep, not proper crying, just a tear or two, but it had an effect on me.

I am just going to write some initial thoughts, then maybe come back to what I think when I have had some distance.

If these were real people I would be shouting at them. "Rebel, run away, hide, Hope, don't do what you are told, don't do what is expected of you, fight!" Within their individual personalities they have this in them. At the start Tommy won't do art, he fights and rebels against it, Kathy constantly questions Ruth's actions and motives, Ruth hopes for a different life, just a working in an office life, but it is a rebellious thought. But that is all they are thoughts, and reality is they just do what they are told, do what they are bought up to do, with very little question of why. They were created to sacrifice themselves, and when the time comes they just step of the metaphorical cliff without a fight.

There are plenty of things in the world we should question but don't, most of us just sit still hoping just hoping someone else will.
